I do not understand why customers get upset when you ask for contact information. They call the store themselves and sometimes get upset when we ask them for name and phone number. They do not understand that the reason we ask this information is to insure that they have a unit. I believe that they feel that we will be calling and hassling them about or that we would use their information for other purposes. In this time of identity theft that is a real consideration. We have to make the customer feel as comfortable as possible. If I were to ask a customer for their name and number and they refuse, I would explain to them that the reason we ask this information is to insure that they receive any special that we quoted them at the time of the conversation.
I also clarify that this information will not be given out, or used for commercial purposes. I then let them know that if they do need additional information that I am not able to supply, then the storage facility manager will get back with them. Hopefully this helps the customer feel at ease and less reluctant to provide this information. You too should learn how to put less stress on the customer.Written by Glenetta Haymon, reservations specialist, and writer.
