Becoming a mystery shopper for our company is quite simple, yet a privilege that many of our own call center representatives enjoy. The process is simple because becoming a mystery shopper should only take a few moments of training concerning the ins and outs of how to receive assignments and use our telephone system to make each call. This is because we want to limit training our shoppers about the details and technical jargon used in the self storage industry so that the shops are realistic - as if anybody off the street were looking for storage. If we over-trained the employees while they were becoming a mystery shopper, then the mystery shops would sound too scripted and unrealistic.

However, do not mistake the fact that becoming a mystery shopper for us is so simple to mean that our shoppers are untrained or incapable. Most of our self storage secret shoppers come from our own sales force and call center. They have thousands of phone calls under their belt and know what kind of questions self storage customers ask in real life. They are able to apply the common self storage consumer to the secret shops they make and yet spice things up by peppering their secret shops with the right amount of uncommon questions or scenarios to keep clients guessing about who their monthly secret shopper really is.

Perhaps the fact that we have such a knowledgeable pool of secret shoppers is why we do not have to do much training on becoming a mystery shopper for us.

There is one important note to make. The difference between becoming a mystery shopper and becoming a certified evaluator for our company is vastly different. While becoming a mystery shopper may take very little training, becoming a certified evaluator takes quite a lot of training. In fact, we only use the highest performing sales representatives from our call center. We select the best representatives that have a solid grasp on the foundation of the sales techniques we use so that they can in turn, train self storage managers and offer valuable tips and training through evaluating the secret shops completed by the mystery shoppers.

So a typical secret shop may be completed by a person knowing very little about self storage, which is ideal so that the call is very realistic. A certified evaluator who could offer valuable sales training advice to help the self storage manager improve their sales performance would then evaluate the recorded call. So the combination of experienced and new secret shoppers benefits our clientele, while always offering qualified training from our certified trainers.

Another very important difference in becoming a mystery shopper for our secret shopper company is the kind of mystery shopper one is interested in becoming. We have the standard Mystery Shopper Program, which is the program that requires little sales training, and then we have the Feedback Secret Shopper Program.

Becoming a mystery shopper for our Feedback program is the most extensive training. While certified evaluators must know the sales techniques we teach, a certified feedback shopper must be able to offer instant coaching and training to the storage managers they shop, immediately after they have made the shop. Feedback secret shoppers have to be able to pretend to be a self storage customer, respond to the questions asked by the self storage manager and interact with them, all while keeping track of the managers performance on the score sheet. Then they must be able to reference important parts of the call during the feedback and coaching portion of the Feedback Shop.
