Unlock the Mystery

  • Often times your competitor is only a mile or two away or even right next door. Of course you know all the reasons why your store is better and every time you see a truck full of furniture and boxes pull into that other guy’s parking lot you wonder how they could have possibly overlooked your store. I mean come on, you have security and your friendly service is unmatched by the grinch across the street. When the better choice is so obvious, how do you lose tenants to the competitor?

To a first time renter or even a repeat renter, all the rows and aisles of storage units look the same. The big doors with their locks and the huge gate at the front create a certain mystery around just exactly what goes on in a self storage facility. Or maybe your store is like the Macy’s store sitting right next to the thrift store. People expect to pay a lot more in your store so if they’re on a budget they may not even look into your prices.

There’s a lot you can do make your store stand out and attract attention from the competitor. The best way to let your shoppers know that you are the safest and most valuable guy in town is to tell them. On the phone or in person, tell every customer what security features you have and how they will benefit from them. Avoid bashing the other guy; you don’t need to bring them down, just elevate your store. Advertise low prices or a price matching offer so that customers know they can have “Macy’s” at thrift store prices.

Once your customers and tenants are educated on all the amenities of your storage facility they won’t want to go anywhere else and they’ll value your store as much as you do.
