The Truth of Consequences

I went to a baseball game tournament last night. My husband’s work has a team; it was a beautiful night so I thought Isaiah could run around the ball field and get out some energy. After the game, several of the coworkers sat around chatting. There was a mixture of managers, full time and part time associates.
We were all having a good time and then one of the supervisors and a manager began talking poorly about another (who wasn’t there). The conversation began to bug me as I realized that whatever problems there truly were had just become that much harder to fix because these handful of people were completely disrespectful of the manager. Who knows if what they were saying was true, but the point is that by disrespecting their boss, they are making the work environment unpleasant not only for them, but all the other eighty-something employees.
It’s important to resolve tension and conflict appropriately so that productivity doesn’t suffer- especially when employees begin to push the limits purposely. Consequences are neccessary not only to correct the offensive employee, but to respect the employees that do their jobs.
