The Bigger Picture

We recently undertook a minor remodeling project in our home. There was nothing as major as removing walls or adding on, but we did remove all the old trim and refinished the walls for our entire main floor. It started out as my desire to repaint, which lead us to take a closer look at all the nicks and nail holes in the wall (and a few places that had previously been poorly repaired). We decided we had a few options. We either sanded down every wall, knocked the drywall out and put up new, or covered all the imperfections up with a textured finish. We opted for the textured finish.

The texture is up and it turned out nicely, but that lead us to see that all the molding had been painted over too many times and didn’t all match. So we had to take that down and replace it. Which then lead me to look at the interior doors that had also been painted a hundred times, apparently purple was a good color for doors a few layers back. So we sanded the closet doors and replaced the hallway doors. And the process hasn’t ended yet…

Joel and I sat down and made an itemized list last night. At least now we know what we got ourselves into.

My point is that what sometimes seems like a quick fix ends up snowballing into more and more work. My advice is to look at the entire picture and assess how long and how much work and money everything will take.
