Squeaky Clean
-
I got my start in the selling culture in the sixth grade. Many of my friends had jobs. Most of the kids my age were sacking or delivering groceries, and I thought those guys worked awfully hard for next to no money. I noticed there were glass windows everywhere along the retail streets where I lived in Brooklyn, New York. There were only adults washing windows with buckets, squeegees and ladders. But most of the glass I could reach without a ladder and one could buy window cleaner in a spray can. So I got myself a roll of towels and a can of window cleaner and started a window cleaning business. I stopped in on all the little retail businesses and offices that lined the main shopping street in my neighborhood and created a little office window cleaning route for myself. The small business owners thought it was cute to let an ambitious kid have the business, especially since I was a lot cheaper than using an established cleaning business. I was making three times what my buddies were making delivering groceries, and I thought, You know, this entrepreneur life isn’t bad, and I’ve been at it ever since. I’ve started companies from nothing and turned them into something. I managed salespeople, ran marketing programs, created business models and sent lots of dollars to the bottom line. Just so you know; I’m not talking out of left field.
