When hiring for our call center, we look for employees who are friendly, who have good phone manners and also who can sell. It is important to have some sales experience or be able to pick it up pretty quickly and be comfortable with it. Customer service is always important as well, but you just have to know how to separate the two. Some times you can get caught up in customer service and want to help the customer so badly you forget about the end result, which is to sell.
We work for the self storage business; we sell the facility and the price to rent a storage unit over the phone. We give them all the information so that when they go in all they have to do is the paper work and move in. It’s almost like buying something sight unseen. although we don’t collect all the rent over the phone we just make the reservation.
The is such a big business now it’s not the same as storing in old shed behind grandpa’s house. The facilities are now big beautiful multi story buildings with climate control and carpet. I passed by one in St. Louis and could have sworn it was an apartment building. It had windows and landscaping it was just a beautiful building. So it is not easy to see over the phone.
But most of all what I look for in hiring a call center rep is do they smile on the phone??? It is very important to have that smile. When you are on the phone you need to be smiling. It helps to sound like you care about the customer and setting them up with storage. It makes you sound friendly and happy. Let’s face it, who would want to talk to someone who isn’t friendly especially when you have a stressful situation that you
