Service With A Smile

    Patience Is a Virtue.

That said, I am not a virtuous woman. It’s been 2 months since my doctor told me I had to be on bed rest until my son was born. During that time, I’ve regressed into staying in my pajamas all day and only moving from the couch to the kitchen. Although, I suppose that’s the meaning of “bed rest”. It’s mind numbing at times. I get excited when the UPS driver pulls up to the door, in hopes that he’ll say hello and offer me some sort of contact with the outside world. I’ve become isolated, as if I’m quarantined. A smile comes over my face when I hear the beep of my email account summoning me to read a new message. I’ve even sunk low enough to read forwards and spam!

I did get to venture out to Wal-Mart recently. The experience I had there I hold close to my heart. It lights my day, as I sit here waiting for Joel to get off work so I will have some one to talk to. Ok, maybe that’s going a little overboard, but I did have a good experience there. I was checking out and I had purchased a hanging ivy plant for the kitchen window. Joel was already paying for our items when I realized I had no hook to hang it on. He took our groceries and things to the car and I went back for the hook.

Moments later, he called me from the parking lot, saying that he forgot the plant at the check out stand. After selecting the cheapest hook (it’s only a hook) I went back to the same register. There stood the friendly lady who had checked us out only moments ago. She had laughed with our son and made friendly comments the first time.

She was glad to see me and immediately gave me the plant we had forgotten. Then she started asking when the baby was due, and about our 2 year old son. She told me some cute stories about her children, and we chatted for a minute or two. (Believe it or not, there was no one waiting in line behind me. How often does that happen?)

Our short, but sweet conversation brightened my day. After having such limited, almost non-existent contact with society, it was uplifting to meet some one cheerful. There she was, standing all day at her job and still giving great customer service. Her nametag read, as if this isn’t a sign that she must’ve been an angel in disguise, Jolly. So thank you, Jolly, from checkout number 11.

Customer service is more important than you may know, especially to some one in need of a smile. In the self storage industry, It’s not uncommon to encounter stressed customers going through changes in life. Offering those customers a smile and some peace of mind will make their day and build customer loyalty.
