Self Storage Trends

It seems just a few weeks ago that the phones were not so very busy.  Those of us who have been through the winter months during the call center slow season knew that when the weather broke that call volume would break loose.  It amazes me that so many people from all around the country are calling to ask about storage units.

I had always believed that there could be other arrangements.  Then my ex-husband started moving out of the house we shared.  He rented an efficiency apartment that was about the size of a motel room.  It was obvious that not even a tiny bit of his possessions were going to fit there so I helped him rent a 10 x 10.  I have always envisioned a 10 x 10, as being able to more than meet the needs of the space one person would need.  To my surprise, the unit was jam packed full and there was nearly 3 times what it was holding still in the house and a small building on the property.

His attitude is that he has been evicted.  I know that we receive calls from people everyday that have been evicted and need to store right away.  This move and storage is very traumatic for my ex-husband and I am certain much more so for people who are in a situation forced to lose what they cannot store or move to new quarters.

People who have purchased RV’s have a different set of problems.  RV space is limited.  Some of them may have owned the RV and park it on their own property but now the homeowner’s association or the municipality of residence demands that it be removed.  Some have moved and are finding that everything available is rented and there is a long waiting list.    Many self storage facilities have no spaces for outdoor parking and the new RV-only facilities have numerous amenities for RV’s but at a price that is not always within the caller’s budget.

There are as many reasons to need storage, as there are people.  Remodeling, missed closing dates for real estate sales, college students needing temporary storage for dorm room furnishings and military personnel being deployed to combat zones are just a few.

It boggles my mind that on top of all the calls we take the local stores are so busy that we need to take these overflows.  If these self storage trends continue this could be the fastest growing industry in the world.
