Self Storage Property Management

If you know that you are going to be shooting for a position in property management at one of your local self storage facilities, then there are a number of things that you are going to keep in mind before you begin to apply for positions.  First and foremost, reader, you are going to have to be sure that you possess all of the skills that are expected of you as a property manager.  Next, you are going to have to be sure that you are brushing up on all of your people skills, such that you do not drop the ball when you are faced with an in person sales appointment.  So long as you are willing to work on these things, though, then you are going to find that you do not run into much trouble when it comes to finding the job that you have always wanted.

First and foremost, reader, you are going to have to be sure that you possess all of the skills that a self storage property manager has to have before you even think about applying for what few positions are actually out there.  Principally, you are going to want to be sure that you are not feeling too shy about handling a few power tools here and there.  When something breaks on your property, you are going to be the first person who is held accountable for fixing it.  This, of course, does not mean that you have to be a master of your craft.  If something goes terribly wrong and you have to call in a repairman, that is not going to be the end of the world.  If, however, you find that you cannot even cut a lock off of a self storage unit without help, then you are going to want to brush up on your skills before you begin applying for positions.

Moving on, reader, you are going to have to be sure that you are ready and willing to deal with people in a face to face fashion.  Part of what you are going to be doing, here, is making sure that you handle in person sales appointments well.  Thus, when a customer comes to visit your property, you have to be sure that you are not dropping the ball.  Brush up on your presentation skills in a big way, making sure that you can give a tour of your property without clamping up.  Furthermore, be sure that you can answer all of the questions that typically come your way when you are giving a tour of your property.  If you cannot answer basic questions as you are giving a site tour, then you are not going to be able to close any of your sales at the end of the day.  You are going to disappoint all of the customers who happen to come your way.

When you really sit down and put your mind to it, you are not going to have that much trouble when it comes to finding a self storage job that you can manage.  You just have to be sure that you are brushing up on all of your skills, and that you are learning as much about your property as you possibly can for your site tours.  Once you take care of that, you know that you are in the clear.
