Last night, my lovely wife brought home an article about the ROWE concept in work places. The article was focused on the company that I currently work for and explained how it would work at the corporate level. If you are unfamiliar with this concept, ROWE stands for Results-Only Work Environment. Co-workers had the option of coming in to work or working from home. As long as the work was being done and the results were high, they never had to come in to work and could spend more time at home with their family.
What does this have to do with anything? Well, the article talked about how there was a lot of push back against this idea due to wanting to keeping track of their employees’ progress, having necessary meetings, and bosses wanting to be in their faces ensuring the processes were being done. Here’s the thing. Would bosses need to do that if they knew they had quality people who worked for them? Would they need to be in their faces to get results or could they relax knowing the work would get done?
If managers would take the time to invest in quality people and not just hire warm bodies, production would be up and turn over would be down. Also, the manager’s stress level would be down as well. Or, I’m going way out on a limb here, managers might fear the thought of not having people to rule over one daily basis and become insecure of their own jobs.
