At my current job, the company always requires you to find a replacement before they allow you move up in the company. I have been a manager or supervisor almost everywhere that has had the honor of employing me. This is the first job that has ever required me to find someone to take my spot. I always thought it was their job to find my replacement. When you take a moment to think about, they might have a great idea in motion.
A lot of people are ready to say, “I am ready. Promote me.” It might be true that they are ready to be promoted. If they get promoted, what happens to the steps below them? Will the next person in that position also be ready to fill the void that you left or will they be under qualified? At my company, we are responsible for training, developing and shaping the person who is to take our spot. This gives us responsibility and accountability for their performance. If we do a good job, you will still have a strong team under you. How awesome is it to have input, you know the person’s work habits and you can trust the person who replaces you vs. some brand new person from the outside now being part of your finely tuned business machine?
I believe my company to have it right and that could be a reason why they are a fortune 75 company. If you have strong leadership and are developing and training new leadership you won’t fail as a business. You can apply the same principle to your or property management business; have your existing veterans or managers train their replacement before they leave or get promoted. This will build a strong team and they’ll learn how to work together.
