Special Self Storage Accomodations

Shopping around for a self storage unit can be a real pain in the neck if you do not know what you are doing. There are tons of units available, and all of them seem to be catered to specific types of items. Some units are going to work out very well for standard items that are not sensitive to changes in the temperature and humidity. Other units are going to work for precisely the opposite. Of course, if you are looking for a way to maximize the utility of your storage unit, then you are going to want to keep a few things in mind as you are calling around. None of this advice is very complicated, reader, but that does not mean that it is not incredibly important.

The first thing that you are going to have to consider when you are shopping around for a self storage unit is whether or not you are going to require any special accommodations. Of course, depending upon the items that you are planning to store, you might very well find that you are going to need to rent a specialty unit. The first thing that you are going to have to consider when you are shopping around for a self storage unit is whether or not you are going to require any special accommodations. Of course, depending upon the items that you are planning to store, you might very well find that you are going to need to rent a specialty unit. Let us say, for example, that you know that you are going to be storing a ton of electronics. You have DVD players, televisions, computers, and the like, and you would like to make sure that none of them are going to be harmed by their stay in your self storage unit. Of course, to keep these sorts of items safe, you are going to have to be sure that you rent a climate controlled, humidity controlled self storage unit. Electronics are going to straight up break if you are not careful to store them in an appropriate environment.

If you are going to be storing musical instruments, then you are also going to have to be sure that you are renting a climate controlled self storage room. Wooden instruments are going to bevel, crack, and outright break. If you are lucky, then they are simply going to go out of tune, which is still a huge inconvenience. You spent a ton of money on your musical instrument, so you are going to have to be sure that you are ready and willing to cough up a few dollars to keep it safe while it is in your self storage unit.

Now, if you are not going to be storing anything temperature sensitive, then you are going to be able to get away with renting a standard unit. But do not be misled, here. Many simple items are actually going to be a lot safer in a climate controlled self storage unit. If, for example, you know that you are going to be storing a ton of clothes, then you are going to have to be sure that you are renting a climate controlled self storage unit. If you store your clothing in a standard unit, then it is going to begin to develop a stinky, outdoor kind of smell. With repeated washings, you are going to be able to get rid of this smell, but it is still a huge, and someone nasty, inconvenience.

At the end of the day, there is nothing to worry about when you are assessing whether or not your belongings are going to call for a specialty unit. Simply take an inventory of what you are going to be storing, and be sure that you are asking your property managers what you are going to need to keep your belongings as safe as possible. You will find a unit that is going to work out just fine for you.

Yesterday’s blog entry, written by Joel Little, discussed his preference for big box stores with lots of overhead and the means to carry that much overhead. Of course, I have to give my opinion, especially since I’m the wife he was talking about— you know, the one who saved us hundreds of dollars.

Today’s consumers seem to get starry-eyed when they see big, square, blue buildings with neon signs, boasting wide aisles and endless rows of shelves stocked 8 feet high. But what about the little guy? Do all the little fish have to get eaten by the bigger fish? I say no.

I prefer the intimate feeling of a small hardware store as opposed to the massive amounts of screws and hinges at bigger stores. Obviously, there are advantages to having more options, but I like seeing the same guy I met the day before at the counter. I appreciate the fact that he might remember my name and even help me put the big pieces of lumber in the truck. The store with all the fancy signage and neat endcaps has to have more staff and usually higher turnover in their staff. That means when I walk up to the teenager working at his first job and ask him how to install a floor, he’s going to give me a blank stare because he probably hasn’t gotten that far in his e-learning.

There are definite giants in the self storage industry. Those guys have lots of nifty gadgets and sparkly signs, but don’t let that discourage you, the little guys, from giving them a run for their money. You have an advantage over them because you can provide an intimate and homey atmosphere. In an economy ran by big-box stores and fortune 500 companies, consumers appreciate the personal attention you can give them. Self storage facilities especially need to be an inviting place where customers feel safe putting their belongings. And I’ll let you in on a secret, the big guys try really hard and put a lot of money into making their stores feel like a personal, inviting space and not so much like a massive beast.
