Are you turning away business?

I went to a popular sandwich shop to purchase 22 gift cards for prizes for PhoneSmart. The closest location is just around the block and is the most convenient. The person that was running the cash register had to be called out of the back…twice. When he finally arrived, I told him I wanted to purchase some gift cards. He started scratching his head and told me that their machine to validate the gift cards was broken. Then he saw my list and the credit card I was going to pay with. He then said that to purchase gift cards you had to pay in cash. WHAT? Do people actually carry cash? Ok, on to the next location.

As I walked into the next location, I was greeted warmly and stood behind the man in front of me in line. An employee that had been in the dining room let me know that it would just be a minute. She came around the counter and I told her I wanted gift cards; she waved me down to the register and started to help me. I apologized for being flustered since I could not get the cards at the other location. She helped me quickly and rang my credit card for the transaction. She even offered me a soda while I waited for all the cards to be validated. Done, thanks other location.

Does your self storage property offer something that you can’t deliver? Be careful of advertising and signage that might lead your customers or future customers to think you have something that you really don’t. I am not talking about being sold out of something; I am talking about providing great customer service to your self storage properties. Are you letting business walk out the door? Are you letting your customers down?
