  • One of the places that a mystery shopper has to visit more than others is a mall whether it is a clothes store, a fashion accessories outlet or a jewelry house. Malls are places where a lot of people keep visiting and they are some of the busiest public venues. Customers evaluate the satisfaction provided by the different outlets and visit those outlets most frequently that offer them the best satisfaction along with quality products. It has been observed that a number of firms might produce products of similar quality, but consumer satisfaction is what differentiates one from the other and helps some firms and retail outlets stand out in the crowd.

    A mystery shopper visits retail outlets in the guise of a consumer. He observes the time taken by the staff out there to attend to him. He makes enquiries and sees the way the staff members handle his queries. Consumers have different personalities. Some of them are very sociable and others are reserved. The former category tries to strike a conversation with the staff member serving them. The people belonging to the latter category are interested in keeping their conversations strictly restricted to the purchase deal that they are negotiating and do not like to indulge in friendly conversations with the consumer relations staff. There are some people who are well balanced and they do converse a bit while selecting the items of their choices.

    A mystery shopper might pose as a client with a certain mentality and assess the response of the staff members. The staff members should be able to converse with the consumers in a frequency that best suits their personalities and interests. A well trained staff member will be able to assess the exact feature that a consumer is searching for in the available products and produce the article with the desired feature within minutes. In this way, he wins over a lot of consumers. A staff member who is cheerful and well disposed is an asset for the retail outlet. But, the staff member is not the only person who is responsible for maintaining a good atmosphere in the retail outlet. The consumer also has a role to play. If the very attitude of the consumer is to be highly fastidious, even the best sales staff member around can hardly help in satisfying him and finalizing a deal.

    A mystery shopper might also pose as a consumer who is pretty difficult to satisfy and observe the behavior of the staff in such a situation. Patience is a virtue in the case of business dealings. The staff is expected to show a number of products to the consumer till he gets satisfied. Impatience on the part of the staff will only result in the consumer getting dissatisfied and moving on to another retail outlet. However, if a consumer is not being reasonable, the staff has the right to take appropriate action.

    A mystery shopper might also pose as an angry client to see how the staff members deal with him. It is a good practice to not take any complaints and allegations personally by the staff. They should not tackle the behavior of the angry consumer in an emotional way. They should maintain professional demeanor under all circumstances and try to explain the situation to the angry consumer.
