At the Phonesmart call center in Columbia Missouri, I have learned the meaning of working with a skeleton crew.  This is when the crew that is working is limited staff.  This happened with the first snowfall of the year.  Although it was predicted to happen on Friday it began on Thursday.  At our self storage call center there was suppose to be six personnel scheduled to work the phones.  However, out of the six personnel only 1 showed up.  The day crew that was scheduled to be off, 2 of us (me included) stayed to help with the phones otherwise it would have been 1 personnel on the phone instead of the three that we had.  As nature would have it, these personnel were unable to make it in.  It was unbelievable!!  One of the employees was stuck because they were unable to defrost the car which prevented them to see through the windshield and the back window.  Of course both of these are needed to be a safe driver.  The good Samaritan came out in one of the night time crew members and volunteered to go and get the stranded personnel with the car problem and then due to the low temperatures with the freezing rain and the (at the time) light to medium snowfall he was unable to get out of the driveway of the person that he went to help.  If this is not enough for your reading, two of the employees that were on their way to the  work were stuck at their destination due to the freezing rain and/or sleeting and unable to make it in.  The personnel that DID make it deserves a medal and a pat on the back because not only was this personnel stranded due to the key breaking off in the key hole of their vehicle when trying to open the door, this outstanding employee caught a cab to be here.  Now that is dedication and it was another piece of the skeleton that we needed to operate.  A self storage secret that we learned is that although it is call after call it is possible to work with a skeleton crew just not recommended.
