One thing that most people like about their company is the opportunity to advance. Not all companies offer the opportunity to advance. In property management, when your company opens another store, there needs to be a different set of needs for that property. With the creation of new properties, that one passion keeps most people going and brings them into their building each day. No, this is not a blog about passion, but it is a blog about where your people go from where they are. In property management, there are many opportunities for someone with in your facility or company to advances as long as they are doing what is necessary.
Many people have worked for smaller companies where there was not very much chance of advancement and they have decided to leave those companies. With the people you have working for you, do you know where they want their career to go? Do you know if working in self storage is what they would like to do long term. Do they want to get involved in property management since they now have some experience? It is well known that some managers working for over a decade in this industry and some people leave after a couple of months. The same is true of any industry. Of course, in property management, the job is not for everyone. In property management, most property managers should know how long you could expect people to work for you.
If we take the time to get to know our people and what they want to do in life, maybe it corresponds with our business. In property management, there might be many people that work for you that want to be architects, doctors, lawyers or what have you that are greatly benefiting from the experience of self storage. There are many people that want to move up the ladder and see where it takes them in property management. Unfortunately, not all companies have a long ladder to climb up. Most property management companies are not big enough to have too many people at the top. At least there could be promotional opportunities from the person that starts out taking applications to rent to become a property manager.
By knowing the passion and commitment level of your people, you can plan to hire new people or use your time to develop those would want to stay with the company for years to come. In property management, you should not treat people differently, but you would have different focuses with some people than others. Always have a plan so no matter what hiccups might come in staffing your business will not suffer. Get to know your people and what they would like to accomplish in their life and they will help you to accomplish your goals as a property manager. By accomplishing your goals, you would have done what you have set out to do in the beginning.
In property management, nothing is for certain. You should always look towards the future to try to be ahead of the potential problems so you can not go backwards. You should know your business and understand your needs. Try to develop the people that you can that want to eventually get into property management. This way when the time comes to expand your business, you have people that can greatly help your business grow.
