How many times have you walked up to a customer and had this conversation…
“Sir, how may I help you today?”
“Oh, I am just looking. Thank you.”
“Well, is there anything in particular you were looking for?’
“No, just looking.”How many times do we here that phrase a day? I believe way too many. Is the customer really just looking, or do they just not want to talk to me. The customer really does have questions they just need to feel as if they can share their questions or concerns with you.
There are many ways I have seen associates try to get people to open up to a sales person. When people walk into retails stores, they feel that someone is going to try to sell them something they do not think they need. We have to get the customer to relax and make them feel that we are here to help. Using phrases such as,” I am here to help you find something that fits your needs.”, or,” We have some great specials that we believe could benefit you, and I would be more than happy to tell you about them.” Anything that you could think of to peak their interest, could potentially turn the just looking customer into a potential buying customer.
