Internal Integrity

  • As a leader for most of my retail and working life, sometimes it is hard to take a step back and evaluate yourself.  What did I say?  Evaluate ourselves as leaders?  Yes, that is what I said.  Self-reflection and realizing your flaws as a leader, shows great humility.  When you are humble as a leader, you are able to take criticism from your upper management and accept the same from your team.

By listening to your staff’s requests on improving the quality of the work environment, that shows great respect for their ideas.  When your staff knows that you care about them and respect them, they will in turn respect you.  When they respect you as a leader, they will follow any direction that you give them.  When they lose respect for you, you start to lose the glue that holds together the puzzle.

When you make decisions as a leader, stand behind them.  Never try to show employee favoritism over another.  Never go back on your word because your word is what the employees believe to be true.  It is a lack of judgment and integrity as a leader if you deviate from procedure, being hypocritical and/or to better promote yourself for future advancement.  Maintaining your integrity keeps your value as strong leader for your team.

Why am I telling the readers of this blog this?  Because whether you are a leader or not, you should expect the above from anyone that you call co-worker or even friend.  Showing respect, integrity and humility goes way beyond the hierarchy of leadership, but into the everyday work environment of strong self storage or any businesses.
