I Am A Shopper, Hear Me Roar!
-
I recently decided to redo my master bedroom and I needed a new set of bed sheets. I shopped around on the Internet and local stores, and kept my eye out on the advertisements. Finally, exactly what I wanted went on sale at a local department store. I went there directly after work with the ad in my hand and money in my purse!
This long established department store has recently been bought out by a discount store, so I understood it when I couldn’t find an employee to wait on me. But that was okay, because I knew exactly what I wanted! After quite a time searching, to my dismay I discovered they had every size available except for Queen, which of course was what I needed. No problem. I was on a mission.
I tracked down a cashier and explained my dilemma. I asked her to look and see if there were any Queen sized sheets stored in the back. She proceeded to tell me that it was her first day on the job and she had no idea how to do that. I said okay, is there someone she could call? After calling four different departments that were of no help, she finally got a hold of a manager that came to us.
The manager was a friend of mine from years ago, so I thought great, now I can get some help! Manager Mary said she thought that size was out of stock, but that she would check for me. After a few minutes Mary walkie-talkied back to the Rookie that indeed they were out of what I wanted; I never saw her again.
Okay. I wasn’t giving up yet. I asked Rookie if she would check to see if the store 30 miles away had what I wanted. Maybe they could ship it here, or I could drive there to buy what I was seeking. Again she got on the phone, this time trying to find out how she could call another location. Still determined, I then asked if I could get a raincheck. Being her first day and all, she of course did not know how to do this.
Finally, my nerves were frayed. I proceeded to turn around and walk out. And not only did I give up on my purchase; I went home, wrote a complaint email to the company, tore up my credit card, and have since repeated my story several times to friends and family. (And now even in a Mystery Shopping Blog!)
I wasn’t a paid Secret Shopper for the company. I wasn’t even a secret! And I doubt the company will go out of business on my account. But always remember, treat each and every customer, even customers like they are a mystery shopper and that your job depends on your performance. Who knows, that just might be the case!
And yes, I did finally get a nice set of sheets. For just $2.99 shipping, I bought it off the Internet. And I didn’t have to worry about if it was anyone’s first day on the job!
