Glenda reached for her change from the cashier, who still had not said a word during the entire transaction. Glenda wondered what was so hard about saying hello, or thank you. Understanding that everyone has bad days, she tried not to overlook it as she walked out of the store with her purchases. But something kept nagging at her. She remembered working in retail in her early twenties, and she knew what it was like to have to paste on a smile, day after day, even though she had so many other things going on in her life. She had done it, and she knew that it was possible.

All at once, it occurred to her that maybe the humorous exchange at dinner between she and her husband was connected, somehow, with the retail property managers clearly disinterested demeanor. After weeding through dozen or so websites that were asking for money for one thing or another, she stumbled upon a forum of individuals who took the business very seriously. She read through many of the entries like mini storage shops , self storage shops , clothing stores, banks and more . Some were comical recollections of an assignment gone horribly awry, but others offered tips as to which companies were the best to work for, and she even picked up a trick or two that could help her maintain her anonymity during the assignments that she worked.

Before the night was through, she had filled out an application for a company that would not only allow her to start working within the next week or so, but that would also offer complete training on how to become a secret shopper .

That night, as she lay in bed thinking about all that had transpired that day, she felt like she had already begun to make a difference in the quality of customer service in her neighborhood. It pleased her to think about how one tiny incident could have potentially sparked a new career for her. She was so excited about beginning on this new path, it took her an hour and a half to finally nod off to sleep.
