Giving Great Service All The Time

  • “Thank you for calling xyz company, this is ___.  How may I help you?”

This phrase is a common opening phrase for most of us, especially those that work in the storage business or in call centers.  For those who work face to face with customers that are looking to buy or rent a storage unit, we use a different, but similar phrase.  When you use this phrase, remember who is supposed to benefit from the interaction.

We sometimes lose focus on who is supposed to benefit from the phone call or face to face interaction.  Some sales people out there work on commission and they are focused on how much money they will be making off each item purchased.  When they know that a customer is not going to purchase, rent a storage unit,  or do whatever it is to gain commissions, they start to decrease their service.  I have heard so many times in which the interaction was doing so well and the customer service was outstanding, then it takes a turn for the worst when the customer decides to utter a single phrase…”I am just looking around today.”  Then the sales person tries to end the call or just says,” well, let us know if you need any help,” then walks away.

We all need to remember,we are employed because people buy things.  If we don’t deliver great customer service no matter if they buy now or if they buy later (if you treat them like crap now, they won’t be back), we need to completely satisfy their needs.  When you utter the phrase, “can I help you?,” really set out to help the customer with in your means.
