Finding The Right Man (or Mom) for the Job

  • As the mother of five children, I seldom am able to rest my head straight through till the morning.  I don’t mind most of the time.  I don’t need much sleep and when I do have to get up with one of the kids, I usually fall right back to sleep.   The problem is my husband.

My husband is wonderful, amazing, and handsome.  He empties the dishwasher, does laundry, and takes care of the yard.  He plays with the kids, helps them with homework, and goes out of his way to make sure I get time away from the house.  So why does it drive me crazy that he is worthless at night?

The problem is usually when someone is congested or throwing up and I have been up and down a good fifteen times.  Inevitably, I decide it’s time to bring my husband into the mix.  The scenario usually goes something like this, “Honey, it’s your turn.  I’ve been up all night.”  My husband opens his eyes and grunts while I curl up and consider dreamland.  He rolls over, sits up, gets out of bed and stubs his toe, every time.  The same toe, the same bed, same bed leg, and the same cuss words.  Within seconds I am back in the kids bedrooms getting everyone settled down.  Eventually, I make my way back to our room and find my husband snoring away.

It’s not insanity, but rather desperation that brings me back time and time again.  I don’t really expect different results.  I know he is not going to be able to find the medicine or make a bottle with one hand.  When I have been up all night, I just get desperate.  It is interesting to note, however, that everyone seems to settle in and sleep better after hearing a string of profanities.

I tell you this story because it’s a funny one, but also as a reminder that it is important for all of us to focus on what people are good at and to encourage them to concentrate on those things.  No one likes to be set up for failure.  Asking someone to perform a task they are not capable of or that they do not have the time to complete can create stress in the relationship and result in important tasks being left undone.
