Financial Stress

The cost of living in Connecticut is higher than in Missouri. We knew that before we purchased our home this summer, but the cost of living in Connecticut was cheaper than some of our alternatives, so we bit the bullet.
We had looked online at everything – schools, crime, cost of housing, unemployment rates, and utility costs. With that information we were able to narrow down our search and it brought us to Torrington, CT. We have been here for six months and we are growing to love it, but I will never forget calling the heat oil distributor to arrange for monthly budget billing. I cannot tell you how long I stared at the phone when I hung up. I was in shock. I had no idea how I was going to explain to my husband that, “Yes, we’re all set up for budget billing and divided by twelve, we are looking at about $325 a month.” Basically, that was about double all of our utilities combined in the Show-Me State. It got even better when I called the electric company and reality began to set in.
My husband and I have always been proponents of having a parent stay home and raise the children, or at least alternate working schedules. We have always lived very simply – we don’t eat out, we don’t have cable, and our clothes are mostly hand-me downs, but having a parent stay home has always seemed to us to be a viable option for most any family. Moving to New England has given us a new sense of understanding in regards to working parents and day care.
It just makes me think about the hardships incurred by many families today. Do we really think about the financial stress that our co-workers or our employees are under? Just because we are in a livable situation does not mean that the people around us don’t feel as though they are drowning. Are we patient, courteous, and understanding? It’s just something for all of us to think about with the holidays coming around the corner.
