Eating Your Way To A Job

  • Please sit here madam. Here is your menu and the special of the day is a roasted quail stuffed with a cornbread and oyster stuffing, smothered in a light sauce with fresh herbs. This entree goes very well with the house wine.

Is this what your average dining out is like? Did you know that there is actually a job where people get paid to eat dinner? Yes, paid to eat. It sounds to good to be true but there are actual restaurant secret shopping jobs out there.

Restaurant secret shopping is like retail or service oriented secret shopping except that you will be asked to visit a dining establishment instead of the mall. Most companies that hire someone to do restaurant secret shopping are looking for the average Jane or Joe. Not someone too flashy or someone too meek but someone who represents the average customer of that restaurant.

Here are some things that you probably will be asked to notice while you are dining. Different companies will want varied items on their restaurant secret shopping evaluation.

Were you greeted when you walked in the door?
Did your server approach your table in a reasonable amount of time?
Were you told of any specials?
Did you food arrive in a reasonable amount of time?
Was your food hot and pleasant looking to the eye?
    Was your order correct?
Did the server check on you for refills, etc.?
Did the server tell you about the desert menu?
    Were the bathrooms clean?
    Was the restaurant clean?
How many other people were dining in the restaurant?

Of course there are the basic questions on a restaurant secret shopping evaluation like, date, time, what you ate, etc.

You will find jobs about restaurant secret shopping in different areas of the country. Some corporate restaurants will hire outside associates to monitor their sites. Sometimes a newspaper will hire or have on staff a person who does restaurant reviews that are printed. Either way the outcome is the same, the person who hired out the job of restaurant secret shopping wants to know how the restaurant scores.

Not everyone is cut out for a restaurant secret shopping job. Even though the thought of being paid to eat sounds great, you are often traveling and consuming large amounts of food in one day. Having a restaurant secret shopping job takes organization, determination, and willpower. The willpower part comes with not eating everything that is put in front of you because you have two more restaurants to visit. Plus, you also have to realize that if you are dining in a smaller privately owned restaurant and the review is bad, you could affect the whole business. This happened recently in our town after a local newspaper sent a restaurant secret shopping columnist to a place and they got bad reviews. The restaurant claims the article ruined their business and the place has since shut down.

So, the next time you sit down to enjoy a meal at your favorite restaurant, look around, there might be someone doing a restaurant secret shopping evaluation nearby.
