Dangers of Micromanaging

  • In all my time in sales I have been under a variety of General Managers or Store Managers (two different retail jobs and seven gm’s in a five year span).  The most interesting but obvious thing about all of those managers was that they all managed differently.  Some managers let us as managers do what we wanted to, to run our individual businesses as long as they knew of what we were doing.  Other managers wanted to be included in, have their input in or tell us what we should do.

At my company, we are all about efficient enterprise.  We are always trying to look for ways to improve our business and our profits.  Since I am in sales, we look for ways to better serve the customer and find ways to make more money on every transaction (that’s what every retail company wants to do, but they just say it in a nicely wrapped statement).  We are to be on the floor improving business.

Sometimes there are managers that spend more time trying to control all the intricate parts of the business (such as stocking control, paperwork, stock levels, etc) that they
lose focus on the goals of the company.  Some managers want to plan where each
employee will stand, what the employees will do each hour of every day they are there or even what to say to customers.  Micromanaging their business will not only take away time from other things they could be doing to improve results, but they also make everyone in their building frustrated because they are always in their faces.

Managers need to sometimes take a step back and realize that they have these people in place for a reason and they have the skills necessary to do the job right.
