Columbia Self Storage Auctions

  • You can actually make money working with the Columbia self storage facilities in Columbia, Missouri. The process is not difficult, but it is a little time-consuming and will require some know-how. You will just need to call around to different storehouse facilities to see when their monthly auctions fall. Many people make a fun, interesting living or hobby out of buying storehouse units full of stuff and selling that stuff for a higher price on the web or in a consignment shop.

    The Auctions

Maybe you did not know it, but most storehouse facilities have auctions once a month or so. These facilities will auction off the contents of a storehouse unit that has not been paid for in several months. Columbia self storage facilities do this because they cannot make money off of store units that no one is paying for. So in order to make a little of their lost profit back and to clean out the units for new renters, they set an auction date and have someone else pay to clean out the unit.

If this seems sketchy, it is not. It is actually perfectly legal. This is the way the legal system has chosen to make sure storehouse facilities are not constantly going out of business because customers rent a unit but never pay for it. Before the facility managers can sell a unit, they must go through a long process of attempting to contact the customer who has not paid, but after about three months of this, the unit can officially be sold. All you have to do is call around to facilities in your area to see when the next auction will be and what the auctioning process is for each company.

    You Never Know

You never know just what you will find in a climate controlled self storage unit that has been auctioned off. Different facilities will have different processes, but at most places you will only be able to glimpse the contents of the unit from the outside. This means that, especially in a big unit, you do not really know what you are getting. You have to be willing to sort through and haul away all the junk in the unit as well as the nice things you may be able to sell.

A Columbia self storage unit may sell for under 100USD at auction but may be full of hundreds of dollars worth of goods. Sometimes buyers find real treasures like antiques and rare collectibles, record collections or electronics in units, and sometimes they only get a unit full of outdated clothes and media. Either way, buying storehouse units at auction is a gamble and an adventure.

    Sort And Sell

Once you have bought the contents of a unit at auction, different climate controlled self storage facilities will give you different amounts of time to vacate the unit. Most of the time, you will need to have the unit cleaned out within a couple of days, and if that is not possible, you will have to rent the unit. So, once you have bought the unit, you will need to bring a truck, sort through everything, and decide whether you will keep, throw away or sell each item. This can be quite a tedious task, but in the end, you may find some real treasures. Think about it. If you can buy a unit for 35 USD but make 250 USD on it with a few hours worth of work, that is a pretty good deal.
