You may not think that shopping around for a self storage unit is all that hard, and you are right.  If you really know what you are doing, and what you should be looking for, then you are not going to run into too many problems when it comes down to shopping around for a self storage unit.  Of course, if you are new to the whole self storage scene, then there are a variety of errors that you are going to want to avoid as you are shopping around for that ideal unit.  Fortunately, these errors are easy to avoid if you know what they are beforehand.  This article, you might guess, will set about identifying some of these errors, such that you can avoid them when you encounter them.

The first self storage error that you are going to want to avoid, here, is renting a unit that is very, very far away from where you live.  You are going to have to keep this in the center of your mind as you are calling around, as it is going to be tempting to rent from a facility that is inconveniently far away.  Typically speaking, you are going to be able to save yourself some money by renting from a facility that is very far away, but that does not mean that you are actually going to want to rent from such a facility.  Just think about the terrible inconvenience of it, driving all of that distance just to get to your belongings.  You are going to end up wasting a ton of your time and money just traveling, which is going to get tiresome very, very fast.

Moving on, here, you are also going to want to be sure that you rent from a facility that is going to treat you with care and respect.  The last thing that you are going to want to deal with in the middle of your moving situation is a rude, unhelpful property manager.  Indeed, when you are trying to get your chores done, it is not going to help, having a rude property manager standing in your way at every turn.  Just be sure that you are avoiding these people as you are calling around, no matter what specials they are willing to offer you.  Poor customer service is something that is going to drive you crazy at the end of the day, so you are best off avoiding it entirely.

Finally, here, be sure that you are not forgetting to look into the history of the property that you are considering.  You are going to want to get in contact with previous tenants, seeing whether or not they have been happy with the service that they have received.  Because you are going to be able to track down all of this information on the internet, you are not going to have to worry about wasting a ton of your time when it comes to staying informed.  Indeed, it is not going to take you more than ten or twenty minutes to figure out whether your local properties have good reputations for keeping their customers happy.

At the end of the day, you are going to find that renting the right storage unit is a process of trial and error.  Even so, you are going to be able to keep yourself much happier if you follow a few simple rules and avoid all of the most common mistakes.  When you conduct your shopping in the correct way, you drastically cut down on the chances of renting a unit that is not going to work out well for you.
