One of the best places to start is on a self storage forum, where you can pose questions for the rest of the local self storage community to answer.  Typically speaking, these forums are going to be populated by both tenants and property managers, meaning that you are going to be able to get a good perspective on the self storage industry by posing your questions.  On these kinds of boards, you are not going to have to worry about running into too many sales pitches.  To the contrary, you are going to be able to rest assured that you are getting the best advice that is out there.  If you do not believe the property managers who you come across, then you can simply check in with some of their tenants and make sure that you are getting the full story.  Truly, it could not be easier.

Of course, you are also going to want to be sure that you are making use of your local mapping services as well.  With these, you are going to be able to track precisely where you local self storage facilities are, and whether or not they are going to be convenient for you.  Obviously, when you are thinking about renting a unit, you are going to want to be sure that you rent it from a place that is close to your house.  While you may stand to save yourself a few dollars a month by renting a unit that is very far away, you are not going to want to do this unless you have a lot of time and money to burn.  I mean, you might as well go with the more expensive option and make sure that it is not a pain in the butt to get to your belongings when you know that you are going to need them.

And finally, reader, you are going to want to be sure that you are not forgetting to ask your family and friends where they have rented their self storage units in the past.  A lot of the time, you are going to earn your relatives some money when you take them up on their recommendations, as many self storage properties actually pay a referral bonus.  Thus, before you decide on a provider, you should always check in with your friends and family to see if they have used any of your local self storage providers in the past.

Any new job can be scary, but jumping into the world of self storage sales is very scary.  While you would not think so at first, it does not take you long to realize that the self storage industry is a very competitive one.  If you have never worked as a salesperson before, then you are really going to have to expand your skill set to survive in the industry.  Of course, I do not mean to scare you by making these claims.  Quite to the contrary, I intend to help you sharpen your skills by sharing with you some of the advice that I had to learn through experience.  With any luck at all, you can avoid making the mistakes that I made when I was just starting out.

It did not take me very long to realize that you cannot be nervous when you pick up the phone and answer a sales call.  If you sound nervous when you are on the phone, then your self storage customers are not going to be able to trust you in the slightest.  They are going to think that you have something to hide.  That, or they are going to think that you do not really believe in the quality of your product.  To avoid these kinds of miscommunications entirely, you are going to have to be sure that you speak with confidence once you answer the phone.  Treat your phone call like you would treat a first date.  You are making a powerful impression upon your customer, and you are not ever going to be given the opportunity to flip that around.  Make it count.

Moving on, here, you are going to want to be sure that you are not forgetting to share a laugh with your callers every now and again.  I mean, if you are not making them laugh every once in a while, then you are only shooting yourself in the foot.  Over the years, I have found that making someone laugh is the quickest way to make them trust what you are saying.  And no, I am not suggesting that you use the power of laughter to mislead your callers.  All I am saying is that by making them laugh, you can more easily guide them towards the sale that you are trying to make.

Lastly, reader, you have to be sure that you are not letting all of your minor little failures fester in your mind.  You simply have to recognize that you are going to make mistakes when you are first starting out.  That is to be expected.  No matter how hard you study, and no matter how seriously you commit this advice to heart, you are going to slip up from time to time.  And that is one hundred percent all right.  Just be sure that you take a step back from your mistakes, consider them carefully, and learn from them.  So long as your mistakes are a vehicle for learning, you are never going to fail at the end of the day.

Clearly, it does not take much to get your feet wet when it comes to launching your career as a self storage salesperson.  Just be sure that you do not throw the towel in too early, and that you learn from your mistakes rather than dwell on them.

Are you looking to get a job in self storage property management?  If so, then you are going to need to do some research before you start sending out your resumes.  Indeed, there are quite a few things that you are going to have to know as a self storage property manager, and failing to learn them is always going to come back and bite you in the end.  Fortunately, there is tons of free advice out there, ready and willing for you to read it.  This article, this very article, is quite the relic of free advice, if I say so myself.

First and foremost, reader, you are going to want to be sure that you know how to work with your hands.  While some of the larger companies are going to have their own fleets of repairmen, you are not going to want to rely on them entirely.  When a customer comes up to you and tells you that, for example, she has a problem with her door, you should be able to head out to the unit and fix it yourself.  Not only is this a more efficient, safer way of conducting business, it is also going to lead your property to a point of higher customer retention.  When your tenants see that their complaints result in immediate action, you are going to win their trust over in a huge way. 

I mean, think about how you would feel if you were the tenant.  Your door is stuck open and you cannot figure out what to do.  You have tried pulling it down, but you have only succeeded in jamming it even further.  You are scared to leave your door ajar because your belongings are plainly visible, and you fear that they may be stolen as a result.  You walk up to the front office and tell the property manager that you are having a problem, he gets up from his chair, walks out to the unit with you, and fixes it on the spot.  You feel great as a result.  Now, you can rest assured that your belongings are safe, and that your property manager is there to help you out if and when trouble should arise.  You are quite happy with your property manager, and you are going to rent additional storage units from this company in the future.  You are confident that customer service must be part of their company motto.

If you do not have adequate experience with working with your hands, then you may find that you stand to benefit from a few vocational courses at the local community college.  If there is something that you do not know how to do, feel free to look it up on a video website or ask questions on a self storage forum.  Listen to self storage property management podcasts and develop a nice, solid understanding of the problems that you are going to encounter most often.  That, and how to set about resolving said problems.  Before you know it, you are going to be quite the self storage property management expert, and you will never have to fear for your position.  Your company will know that you have the skills to watch over the property responsibly, and they are going to be quite happy that you have approached your situation with such seriousness.

You can use your self storage unit as a warehouse for your online store.  If you are trying to expand your operations, and you would like to keep more of your products in stock, then you are going to want to be sure that you are renting a nice, safe, secure place to keep all of them while you are waiting for them to sell.  Heck, renting a self storage unit might make the difference between your business growing and your business stagnating entirely.

Of course, if you are simply looking for a nice, quiet place to get some work done, then you are not going to be disappointed with a self storage rental.  I mean, so long as you pay your monthly rent, there is not going to be too much of a limitation as far as how you can use your unit is concerned.  Just be sure that you are not violating any of the policies of your self storage property, and you are going to be just fine at the end of the day.

As we say in my family, the world is your oyster if you can think outside of the box for a moment.  I mean, the self storage unit is not a complicated thing, but the number of activities that it can help you with is truly confounding.  If you have never looked into self storage unit before because you do not think that you need one, or if you are simply using yours to store junk that you do not need, then you are going to want to take a serious step back to reconsider things.

When it comes to making sure that you are packing your belongings well, there are a few things that you simply have to keep in mind.  Of course, when you are in the heat of the moment, it is tempting to neglect your chores and get away with as much as you can.  Really, though, you might end up paying for your hastiness at the end of the day.  If you are going to take any advice, here, it should be this: take the time that you need to pack your belongings well, and rest assured that you are not going to break anything along the course of your trip, whatever that may be.

First and foremost, reader, you are going to want to be sure that you are using plenty of boxes when it comes to packing your belongings.  This is the mistake that most people make when they are in a hurry.  Instead of securing all of their belongings in a way that makes sense, they simply toss all of them into a giant box and hope for the best.  Well, you know what they say, reader: hope is a futile enterprise.  IF you really want to make sure that your belongings are getting from point A to point B successfully, then you are going to have to exercise a certain amount of proactivity.  Pack your belongings in individual boxes, or at least be sure that you are seperating your boxes into partitions.  The main thing, here, is that you make sure that your belongings are not going to smash up against each other when you are moving them around.

Moving on, here, you are going to want to be sure that you are buying some basic moving supplies to keep your boxes safe while they are in transit.  For the insides of your boxes, you are going to have to be sure that you are wrapping all of your belongings in packing paper and bubble wrap.  If you use enough of these, your belongings are going to survive even the nastiest treatment.  Of course, it will help if you use some good packing tape as well.  If you find yourself a nice tape that comes with nylon strips, then your boxes are never going to break open.  Heck, you could even mail them to your new house and you would not have to worry about them breaking open.  I actually did this at one point in time.  I mailed most of my belongings to my new apartment, and I used nylon tape to keep the boxes closed.  I did not have a problem at all.

Finally, reader, you are going to have to be sure that you are securing your belongings well if you know that you are going to be moving them yourself.  IF, for example, you know that you are going to be loading a truck with your belongings and driving them across the city, then you are going to have to be sure that you are securing them with cords before you hit the road.  The last thing that you are going to want, here, is to let all of your belongings slide around and damage each other when you are on the road.

And as you can see, reader, it is not that hard to pack your belongings correctly if you know what you are doing.
