Are You Sending Customers Home Empty-Handed?

We received one of those mass fliers sent out by car dealers about their inventory clearing and the low low prices. Normally I throw them right into the trash but for some reason I read this one. Maybe it’s because I’ve been looking at all the Chrysler 300’s driving by me and it’s made me want one.

The flier advertised a three day sale. I had to work, but Joel decided to take a look around and see if all the low prices they had advertised were really all that low. He must have seriously wanted to look because he took both the boys with him. He called me before he left and said he was going to stop by and he’d call me if he thought there were any good deals.

Five minutes later he called me back. (This was either really good or really bad.) He was annoyed and already in the car driving home. I could tell he was annoyed and he told me that man was the rudest sales person he’d met in a while. He said he told the associate what we were interested in and the associate asked him where his wife was. Joel told him I was at work, but that I could get off early if we found a deal.

Apparently, this associate wasn’t interested in selling that day. He let Joel walk right out the door. Had the salesman offered us a deal in a car that I liked I may have given it some serious consideration. Instead of asking a few qualifying questions and trying to find something to meet our needs, or wants rather, he just played dead and let us go home.

But perhaps his qualifying question was Where is your wife. Maybe he doesn’t make deals when both partners aren’t present. And this leads me to say that you should take a look at your qualifying questions and consider that there are exceptions to every rule. Joel and I are not home together as much as we’d like so why would we waste our time together at the car dealer who probably doesn’t have anything to offer us? That’s why Joel went alone, to see if it was worth our time to go back together. And it wasn’t.
