An Inspirational Guide To Organize Your Clutter

  • Do you have a room in your house that puts you to shame when you think of having to let a guest stay over or friend pop by? It’s the extra room or corner that seems to have a gravitational hold on all the junk, outdated collectibles, photo albums, spare parts and files.

No matter how many times you have cleared out and organized this room or space, it ends up right back into a cluttered pile that makes you want to run and hide.

Take this guide to organizing your clutter as your last ditch effort and give it one more shot. We promise you won’t be disappointed with the end result.

First of all, resist your urge to start organizing your room after a long day of work or late at night. While you may have the motivation and desire to start, if you have been working all day long or it is already late in the evening, you will tire from the task. And giving up mid-cleanup can leave you more frustrated and overwhelmed.

So, plan ahead and set aside a day for organizing your room. If your family members will be helping, let them know ahead of time as well so you don’t spring it on them at the last minute.

Before organizing day, it’s a good idea to shop around your local self storage facilities and get a few price quotes. If you rent a small space to put the items you want to keep, but don’t need taking up the square footage in you home, then sorting through your piles of clutter and turning them into organized treasures will be a smooth process.

When you rent your storage unit ahead of time, the office will also offer boxes, bubble wrap and packing tape for sale. It is typically cheap and definitely convenient to pick all the items you’ll need to organize right at the storage facility.

When the time comes to get to cleaning, be prepared to throw broken or unwanted items away.

To begin, sort items into piles of what you want to keep in your home, what you want to put into your storage unit, what items you want to sell, the things you want to donate and go ahead and throw the trash right into a trash bag.

If you have prepared for the day and already picked up packing supplies from the storage unit, then after you have sorted items into piles, begin packing away the items you want to move to storage. Keep in mind that when you place the items in storage, you will want to take advantage of all the vertical space in the unit.

So pack fragile items in a box and clearly mark fragile so that you can make sure to take extra care when moving the box and keep it at the top of any stacks when it goes to the storage unit. Likewise, it’s a good idea to label the outside of the box with a general idea of its contents so you can quickly find it again.

All the items that you’ve decided to keep in your home should be boxed or placed in plastic totes in much the same way. Make sure to label items and wrap and label any fragile items.

If you are organizing your home office, using a filing cabinet and labeling system will also help you keep paperwork off your desk. And it’s quick and easy for you to buy a basket or box to place on top of your desk to throw the mail or bills into.

Hopefully, this has refreshed you and sparked your readiness to clean out the place in your home where clutter keeps growing.
