Kansas City self storage units can provide a great alternative to the family garage for storing not so frequently used items. Many people stack boxes upon boxes in their garage when their closets become too overcrowded and there is nowhere else to keep those items they just cannot throw away, but have little use for. Soon the garage becomes so overcrowded that the car fits no longer.
Like most families, ours has an extensive collection of holiday items. My husband loves to decorate for Christmas while my favorite holiday for decorating is Halloween. Lights are a big part of my husband yearly decorating effort. We have so many stacks of tiny light strings, large light strings, replacement bulbs, fuses, and extension cords that they take over almost half of our tiny garage. Then there is the tree, the tree decorations, nativity figures, garland, tinsel, wreaths, and yard signs etc. Combined together with the lights, our garage is full eleven months in a year. This does not include all the new things which he buys each year.
Halloween means more lights, more yard signs, robotic signs, a smoke machine, and sound effects. While my Halloween decorations do not come close to the number of Christmas decorations my husband continues to collect each year, it is still a sizeable collection. With the garage stuffed to the gills with Christmas, Halloween often gets stuffed into closets, the attic, and anywhere else we can find a little space. One afternoon when a friend came to visit and was nearly clobbered by a witch on the way to the bathroom, he suggested we check into units. Our friend said we could have our yearly decorations and a garage too. It all sounded like an amazing concept to we decorating packrats.
It seemed like a simple thing to do too. We had to just pack up those decorations and take them to a climate controlled self storage unit. Unfortunately, it did not prove quite as simple as we had hoped. We spent two days going through all the lights, all the signs, all the balls, trying to weed out the things that were no longer in useable condition. Lights that no longer blinked were thrown out, as well as the balls that had cracks or were missing the little hook ring at the top. It seemed there were just as many non-working lights as there were working ones. We then had to search every nook and cranny in the house to find all the Halloween decorations. I found some things I did not even remember buying, including a green wig from a Halloween party several years back. Funny how these things tend to hide themselves in the darkest corners of the closets. Finally, we boxed everything up and took them to our unit at a climate controlled self storage facility.
Holiday decorating is a wonderful way to celebrate any holiday. However, finding a safe way to keep these decorations during the rest of the year is not always easy. The garage is a wonderful place to keep these things, but as my story illustrates, we often run out of room. Decorating for Christmas and Halloween are two very important activities in my household. We could never do it all without a unit at a business.
