A Resume That Stood Out – for the wrong reason
-
PhoneSmart is in the process of hiring several employees for our call center, secret shopping and training positions. I received a resume from a young lady who demonstrated several desirable qualities for one such position. As I was skimming through to the bottom, where she had listed her hobbies, I noticed that she expressed interest in music, art and writing.
What would be an otherwise refined interest in culture turned out to be pretty funny. She had misspelled the word writing! (To her credit, she did not list spelling as one of her strong suits.) I was amused and had a good chuckle about it.
I didn’t discard her application because of the error, but it did make me second guess her resume. When you’re making an impression, be it through oral or written communication, a slip of the tongue or typo can create doubt in the mind of your audience. More so in written word because your reader has only that piece of paper from which to draw their impression of you.
It goes to show that double checking your work and paying attention to detail can make all the difference. We communicate to the self storage industry through our business blog, email, phone and at trade shows. The ability to present a professional product is important; if there are glaring errors in grammar or spelling, it can distract customers from the sale.
